What Witnesses Saw When Gunfire Struck A Congressional Baseball Practice

As we previously reported, Rep. Scalise and four others were rushed to the hospital after a shooter opened fire at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. Several other people were also wounded, officials said. Other victims included a member of Scalise's security detail, U.S. Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner; Zack Barth, an aide to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas; and lobbyist Matt Mika.

At a quickly staged news conference, President Trump hailed the patriotism of Scalise and the heroism of the Capitol Police officers, while urging the country to seek peaceful solutions to partisan disputes. Scalise's office said that the congressman was "in stable condition" at a nearby hospital and "undergoing surgery".

The Congressional Baseball Game will go as planned Thursday at Nationals Park after Democrats and Republicans called for bipartisan unity in the wake of the congressional baseball practice shooting.

Just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, batting practice was wrapping up when the first shots rang out. But Ryan spoke to a shared identity and sense of goal that, when we hear our better angels, crosses party lines.

The special agent in charge of the FBI's investigation said there was no immediate indication of the shooter's motive, and that it was too early to tell if Republicans were targeted.

"We started giving him the liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip", Brooks said.

Capitol Police officers who were in Mr Scalise's security detail wounded the gunman, who later died of his injuries, Mr Trump told the nation from the White House.

The gunman was believed to have been in the Alexandria area since March, Slater said.

"Personally, we have our Italian-American connection, so as soon as I heard his name, I was filled with concern".

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

On his desk, the principal of Archbishop Rummel High School where Scalise graduated in 1983 has a photocopied image of a middle-aged Scalise in a Rummel Raiders baseball uniform, given to him by the school so Scalise could wear it in the game for which he was practicing.

"We are all horrified by this terrible attack on our friends and colleagues, and those who serve and protect this Capitol", the speaker said. "He was just walking and shooting", she said of the man, whom she described as white and wearing a T-shirt and shorts. "There was a trail of blood where he went", Flake said.

"Here's a Republican that should Lose His Job, but they Gave Him a Raise", Mr. Hodgkinson wrote, including a political cartoon that portrayed Mr. Scalise speaking to a group of people clad in Ku Klux Klan hoods.

That simple declaration - "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us" - triggered a standing ovation and sustained applause, punctuated by scattered cheers, that reminded me of the last time I heard it spoken in Congress, after Giffords was shot.

BENNETT: Once the gunman was down, Congressman Brooks says he and another lawmaker, Ohio's Brad Wenstrup, who's a doctor, administered first aid to the wounded using their belts as tourniquets.

House Speaker Paul Ryan reacted to the shooting by telling fellow lawmakers, "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us".

Rep. Jeff Duncan said in a statement that he was at the practice and said "saw the shooter".

Duncan said in an CNBC interview that he told the man the team was Republican and "he said 'K, thanks.' There was nothing earth-shattering about it".
