British leader holds alliance talks with Northern Ireland party chief

DUP leader Arlene Foster, who travelled to Westminster for talks with the Tories on Tuesday, said she hoped a deal could be reached "sooner rather than later".

The Prime Minister will hold separate talks at Downing Street on Thursday afternoon with the leaders of Sinn Féin, the Ulster Unionists, the SDLP and Alliance Party to dispel their fears that the anticipated parliamentary deal between the Tories and the DUP will undermine the peace process.

Sir John who was instrumental to end the IRA conflict in Northern Ireland spoke to BBC Radio 4's World at one programme and warned that about "hard men, lurking in the corners of the communities" saying that "that they wish to return to some sort of violence".

Northern Ireland voted by a narrow margin to remain in the European Union.

"However, whilst talks are ongoing, it is important the government gets on with its business and we are confident there will be sufficient support across the House for passing the queen's speech", a Conservative source said.

As European leaders tried to fathom exactly how Britain would begin the negotiations, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Germany wanted a Brexit deal that would limit negative consequences for the bloc but also did not want it to weaken Britain.

She added: "I've seen this morning some suggestion that the deal, if there is a deal, between the Tories and the DUP will not be published in full".

"We would restore faith in politics if we could show that this parliament can at least function in presenting a view in the national interest which would command a majority on a cross-party basis", said pro-European Conservative lawmaker Ken Clarke.

Before travelling to the French capital, Mrs May had been leading the talks with the DUP.

A chastened Prime Minister Theresa May made progress Tuesday in securing a deal with a small Northern Ireland party with whom she hopes to govern, just days after a catastrophic election wiped out her majority in Parliament.

But there is no possibility that she will pull out of the still, not over the line deal with the DUP, required by her to form a government.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn countered with a bit of previously unseen swagger, wearing a huge red rose - his party's symbol - in his lapel as he sparred with May and taunted her about the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming vote on her legislative program, known as the Queen's Speech.

Talks with the DUP broke up on Tuesday night without an agreement, but Mrs May said the discussions had been "productive".

Earlier, the PM appointed Steve Baker, the hardline Leaver, as a Brexit minister, who said Britain should seek the "softest" of European Union withdrawals while enabling the country to control its own laws, money, borders and trade.

"Although a deal would make parliamentary votes easier I'm not convinced it is absolutely necessary", he said.

Meantime, Mr Corbyn claimed Mrs May's premiership had no mandate and no legitimacy and claimed Labour was "now a government in waiting".
