James Hodgkins of Belleville, Ill., is pictured in a booking photo from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department dated December 31, 1992.

According to his Facebook page, Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, the feisty independent who battled Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination past year. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at a Washington hospital, which said he will require several more operations. Authorities believe Hodgkinson had been in the Washington, D.C., area since March and living out of a white cargo van.

Mr. Scalise was shot in the hip, his office said, adding that the Republican's condition was stable. The gunman was taken into custody and later died of his injuries. "He will recover from this assault", Trump said.

The attack provoked a wave of emotion on Capitol Hill, where Republicans and Democrats expressed concern over a possible rise in verbal or physical violence amid a bitterly partisan political atmosphere in the aftermath of a vitriol-filled 2016 election.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman, despite sustaining gunshot wounds", Trump said.

The president and First Lady Melania Trump later visited Scalise, bringing flowers. The president then tweeted: "Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter". The House of Representatives cancelled all proceedings scheduled for Wednesday. They said an attack on one member is an attack on all, and that's why they're responding with a show of unity.

Sen. Sanders said that the shooter had apparently volunteered on his 2016 presidential campaign. Two congressman said they had sustained minor injuries while trying to take cover. A former congressional aide was hospitalized.

Several other Republican lawmakers were also present at the time at the facility, about 13 km from the Capitol.

They were in good spirits despite the heat and humidity as they prepared for the annual congressional baseball match that pits Republicans against Democrats. The shooter's brother told the newspaper that Hodgkinson traveled to Washington in recent weeks to protest.

Democrats, advocates of stronger gun control legislation, appeared reluctant to reopen the debate but Trump supporter and former House speaker Newt Gingrich denounced what he said was "the increasing intensity of hostility on the left".

His social media presence indicated he was strongly opposed to Republicans, including President Donald Trump.

The Republican's team was practicing their batting at the Alexandria baseball field when shots suddenly rang out.

After Scalise was hit, said Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, the congressman "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood".

"We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good", said the president. He said that they also hoped to learn where the suspect's handgun and rifle had come from, and who had purchased them. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at the practice. "I can not believe that based on how members of Congress look that they play baseball instead of softball", he joked.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting. The man thanked him.

Hodgkinson, who reportedly opened fire with an automatic weapon, was shot in return fire by Capitol Police officers who were at the practice for Thursday's game against the Democrats.

The others shot and wounded were a congressional aide, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, and a US Capitol Police officer.

The event raised questions about the security of members of Congress.

Senator Rand Paul, who was at the practice, spoke about the role Scalise's security detail played in protecting those present during the shooting.

During a security briefing, California lawmaker Nanette Diaz Barragán said Democratic representatives have been receiving threatening calls on their personal mobile phones, with the caller saying, "You guys are next", and "You Democrats, you Democrats", Buzzfeed reported.

After the Giffords shooting, politicians have held fewer open town halls and have been advised to increase security at such events.
