Death toll in London inferno rises to 17

The fire was reported at 01:16 AM (local time) yesterday.

Thirty-seven people were being treated for injuries across six city hospitals after Wednesday's deadly blaze at Grenfell Tower, with 17 of them still in critical care, Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said.

The west London MC claims rising death toll is "corporate manslaughter".

Questions remain over how the fire began and how it spread so quickly through the 1970s-era tower block that was home to as many as 500 people.

"There is going to be a long and complex recovery operation".

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and will be the subject of a thorough investigation", LFB said in a statement.

"The fire is now out, there are small pockets of smoldering". "We do believe that the number will sadly increase", he said.

Dany Cotton told Sky News that authorities don't expect to find anyone else alive after the blaze and that it's too early to speculate on how it started.

The KCTMO said this week it was "aware that concerns have been raised historically by residents" and that those would "form part of our forthcoming investigations".

Adele also visited the scene of the fire last night.

According to the BBC, the cladding had a plastic core, and was similar to that used by high-rise buildings in France, the United Arab Emirates and Australia, which had also suffered fires that spread.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

A resident who ignored that advice is Mickey Paramasivan, who got his children out of Grenfell after waking up and smelling smoke.

"Prince Philip and I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of firefighters and other emergency services officers who put their own lives at risk to save others. It is also heartening to see the incredible generosity of community volunteers rallying to help those affected by this awful event", she said. "The really terrible thing is that we are unaware how many are in the building".

William, Kate and Harry join the thousands of kind-hearted neighbours, strangers and community leaders from across the country who have been moved to offer their support in the aftermath of the disaster which has left up to 600 people homeless. "This is where you find out how good it is to live in England and how good it is to be a Londoner".

Questions have been raised about recently-installed cladding contributed to the quick spread of the fire.

The focus of criticism centres on the cladding fitted to external walls on the 1970s concrete block as part of a £8.7-million ($11 million, 9.9 million euros) refit completed only past year.

Grenfell Tower, built in 1974, contained 120 units of publicly subsidized housing, with low-income and disabled residents given priority.

"There are already disturbing reports emerging of the pipework in the building for a fire emergency being out of action", Ritson says.

The Labour MP David Lammy earlier went further, labelling the fire as "corporate manslaughter" and called for arrests to be made. The local authority, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, thanked donors but said it could not take any further donations.

Emergency service responders and local people gather at a cordon near the site of a massive fire in west London.
