Special counsel investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice, Washington Post reports

President Trump took to Twitter Thursday morning to claim he's caught up in a "WITCH HUNT" led by "bad and conflicted people" following reports that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating him for obstruction of justice.

Robert Mueller's investigation is looking into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, and is also looking into financial crimes among Trump associates, the Post wrote, citing five unnamed intelligence officials.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Kasowitz.

Notably, fired FBI chief James Comey recently told US Congress that President Trump had asked him to drop the bureau's probe into Flynn as part of its wider investigation of Russia's meddling in the US presidential election.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", the president told Comey, according to testimony the former director gave before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence June 8.

Coats told associates that Trump had asked him if he could intervene with Comey to get the bureau to back off its focus on former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its Russian Federation probe, according to officials.

NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines told NPR's Phil Ewing, "NSA will fully cooperate with the special counsel".

When Knoller pressed further, asking why the president can tweet about the ongoing investigation, but she can't comment on said tweets, Sanders responded, "Because I'm not the president".

Trump would need Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller, to carry out such a termination.

A top aide to President Donald Trump suggested that special counsel Robert Mueller is biased even as the White House worked to end a day of speculation over whether the president is considering firing the head of the Russian Federation probe.

The officials said Coats, Rogers and Ledgett would appear voluntarily, though it remains unclear whether they will describe in full their conversations with Trump and other top officials, or will be directed by the White House to invoke executive privilege.

It bears repeating that only Mueller and his team know the exact contours of an investigation.

BARRETT: Right. And if you think back to Comey's testimony, he says pretty clearly that he believes his firing was an attempt to change the course of the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump is not the only one under scrutiny, Barrett said: Investigators are also looking into the finances of Trump associates. That was the case with Jeff Sessions, who wore his loyalty to the president like a badge of defiance whenever questioners probed too deeply.

Mueller's investigative team has expanded in recent weeks.

Both men refused the president's request, the Post said. Any findings by the department's investigation would be referred to Congress, where lawmakers would determine whether to impeach the president.

Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump's orbit, people familiar with the probe said. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".
