Trump's friend Christopher Ruddy says President 'considering' firing Mueller

President Donald Trump slammed special counsel Robert Mueller's expanding probe on Thursday, calling the inquiry into whether he obstructed justice a "phony story" and "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history".

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

The former House speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal Trump adviser, tweeted on Monday: "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

Rosenstein said he was also unaware of any "secret plan" to get rid of Mueller.

'Yeah, all I've heard so much are rumors, ' Ryan said during his Capitol Hill presser Tuesday morning.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein said.

"If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says". Last week, the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, said the committee would ask Johnson to testify about interactions former President Barack Obama's administration had with secretaries of state and local election officials about the dangers the Russian hacking posed to election systems.

Comey testified before the Senate intelligence committee last week and confirmed that he gave Mueller the memos he wrote detailing his interactions with Trump ahead of his firing. During the height of the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon ordered his attorney general, Elliot Richardson, to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

Yesterday, a close confidant of Trump, Newsmax website chief executive Chris Ruddy, said following a White House visit that the president is considering firing Mueller.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the issues Gingrich and others have raised.

Asked in a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing if there was any cause to fire Mueller, Rosenstein flatly replied: "No".

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said on the program.

He interviewed the day before, a few days before, he was appointed special counsel, with the president, who was looking at him potentially to become the next FBI Director.

After Comey's much-watched Senate testimony, the president said in a press conference that he would testify under oath regarding his interactions and conversations with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"You can raise those concerns" to both Mueller and the DOJ, Rosenstein told Graham.

"I think that he should be more cognizant of making sure that the people who come to work with him are non-partisan, for his own credibility", Bennett said of Mueller. "That's Bob Mueller's job to sort that out".
