At least 70 reported missing after Grenfell Tower fire

At least 70 reported missing after Grenfell Tower fire

Police have warned they may never be able to identify all of the people who died in the fire that engulfed a west London block of flats.

Though 30 people have been confirmed dead so far, the death toll is expected to rise as the building held hundreds of people and many were trapped in their homes during the fire.

London Police commander Stuart Cundy said that the conditions inside Grenfell Tower mean that the search operation to recover the victims was extremely challenging.

On the figure of 58, he said: "I really hope it won't, but it may increase", while adding that "it might be that some of those are safe and well", and for some reason, had not yet made themselves known to the police. They previously estimated the figure to be 30.

Prime Minister Theresa May has now admitted the response from the authorities had not been good enough.

As the PM was bundled into a auto, just one mile away at Kensington Town Hall protesters stormed the building to demand justice as anger mounts over the disaster.

"Finally, I would like to repeat what I have said before which is that my heart goes out, those of my colleagues, those of the wider emergency services, the community here, Londoners, and indeed everybody across this nation".

"We're all desperately sad, we're all angry, but of course none of us as angry as those who were directly affected, " Green said.

After visiting Manchester and London after attacks or disasters, she said: "I have been profoundly struck by the immediate inclination of people throughout the country to offer comfort and support for those in desperate need". Steve Apter, director of safety and assurance for London Fire Brigade, said firefighters will continue to work through the night at the scene.

On Saturday, she invited a group of residents and community leaders to Number 10 Downing Street for a two and a half hour meeting to listen to their concerns.

"The government is making money available, we are ensuring we are going to get to the bottom of what has happened, we will ensure that people are re-housed".

Pressed again on whether she had failed to understand the anger felt by the public, she said: "This was a awful tragedy that took place".

The Sun newspaper said 65 people are now feared dead or missing in the fire.
