Baby Foods Contain More Lead than Regular Foods

Baby Foods Contain More Lead than Regular Foods

That means there's no brand information for what products contain lead, but it does show that there's a widespread issue in the US for trace amounts of lead in food.

Low levels of lead contaminate numerous foods Americans eat, including almost all categories of baby food, a report by the Environmental Defense Fund shows.

Baby food versions of apple and grape juices, as well as carrots, had more samples with detectable levels of lead than the regular versions, according to the report.

Although lead, a naturally occurring element, is found in all parts of our environment, there is no safe level of exposure, according to the U.S. "It can have consequences later in life when it comes to issues around attention, behavior", said Dr. Aparna Bole, a pediatrician with UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

The report however did not identify the samples by brands and said that the level of lead present in these food products are considered to be relatively low.

The EDF analyzed FDA data between 2003 and 2013 from the federal agency's "Total Diet Study", which tracks metals, pesticides and nutrients in food. None of the levels of lead found in the baby foods that were tested exceeded the allowable levels. Twenty percent of the samples designated by the FDA as baby food had detectable levels of lead in them, compared to 14 percent for regular foods. Those standards suggest that children get no more than six micrograms of lead per day, based on children having no more than 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood.

At very high levels, lead can kill developing brain cells or be fatal.

This revised definition reflects findings from a 2012 National Toxicology Program Report that concluded a wide range of adverse health effects are associated with blood lead levels less than 5 μg/dL. "The agency is in the process of reevaluating the analytical methods it uses for determining when it should take action with respect to measured levels of lead in particular foods, including those consumed by infants and toddlers". Companies need to investigate, he said.

The Food and Drug Administration has a guidance level for lead of 100 parts per billion for candy and dried fruit and 50 parts per billion for fruit juices.

The reasons for this isn't clear, Neltner said.

There is no known safe level of lead in blood, the study explained.

Yes, exposure to lead from paint chips and contaminated drinking water is not the only things you have to worry about, your child may be exposed to lead through the food they eat. "Root vegetables are a really healthy choice for babies".
