Brush fire grows to 1000 acres near Lake Castaic; 300 firefighters battling

LOS ANGELES-A fast-moving brush fire near Castaic Lake has grown to 1,000 acres and burned two outbuildings, while a separate blaze in San Bernardino prompted evacuations in one neighborhood Saturday as much of Southern California remains under a heat advisory. Officials had said about 35 homes were threatened by the flames.

Some firefighters were transported across the lake in boats, according to the Angeles National Forest.

With the cooler overnight hours, firefighters hope the blaze will slow and ground crews can block the fire's path. "We are directing those that are in the area just know that the air quality is going to be poor". No injuries were reported. Helicopters syphoned water from the lake to make drops on the flames.

The fire near the lake's recreation area north of Santa Clarita prompted a voluntary evacuation, according to Richard Licon, an inspector with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The main "handle" for the fire will come from Angeles National Forest officials, as the fire is now predominantly burning into "backcountry" forest territory, Licon said. "It's all in the forest now, mostly".

Fire officials say a wildfire in Los Angeles County quickly grew to a bit more than a quarter of a square mile.

The fire was first reported at about 2 p.m. PDT on Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 3:15 p.m., shutting down Lake Hughes at Ridge Route roads due to the brush fire, but it was canceled 30 minutes later.
