GJM rules out talks with Bengal govt

Darjeeling: A paramilitary jawan and a GJM (Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha) supporter were reportedly killed on Saturday in Darjeeling's Singmari area during fresh violent clashes between the security forces and the pro-Gorkhaland supporters.

This was the first loss of life since the latest round of clashes broke out on June 8. Banerjee also urged them to lift the indefinite strike called in Darjeeling and directed West Bengal Home Secretary Moloy De to hold an all-party meeting on June 22 in Siliguri, The Times of India reported.

The incident, in which several people were injured, prompted the administration to deploy Army in the area. "It was the Morcha and not police that opened fire", Sharma said.

GJM leader Binay Tamang claimed that two of his party workers were killed when the police opened fire at a GJM procession in the hill town.

"Two of our comrades were killed in police firing". "The movement for Gorkhaland will be intensified".

Refusing to get intimidated by the protesters, CM Banerjee on Monday said that she will not "bow down to threats".

"The final battle is on".

Referring to the agitation against alleged imposition of Bengali, she said it was only an optional subject and not mandatory and GJM was spreading rumours to misguide the people of the hills.

Meanwhile, lashing out at the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's led demonstration, WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said "Five years you enjoyed, now when elections are coming you start violence because you have lost credibility", while denying all deaths in the clashes and said Tamang was critical.

"I am sorry to say it has never happened earlier that my journalists friends have been kidnapped".

"During peak season, tourists were heckled by the Chief Minister with her statements. So many bombs and arms can not be gathered in a day", Banerjee told reporters, adding, "I am ready to sacrifice my life, but I will not allow Bengal to be divided". "They [the GJM] have connections with insurgent groups of the North East".

"There is terrorist brain behind this hooliganism and vandalism", she said, according to PTI. "Ready to talk to them, we can not support the violation of the Constitution", added Banerjee. "There are some other countries also helping", Banerjee said.

Violence has spiralled in the hills after a police raid on the office of GJM chief Bimal Gurung, who is in hiding fearing arrest.

The GJM insisted the police had fired on the protesters. How can they throw bombs at the national flag? "We had to resort to lathi- charge", the official said. We will investigate the matter.

Barring pharmacies, all others shops and hotels were closed in Darjeeling.
