Thomas burns up Erin Hills with record score

Thomas burns up Erin Hills with record score

This might have been more than anyone was expecting.

BROOKS KOEPKA, Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood and Brian Harman share the 36-hole lead at the U.S. Open with all four seeking their first major title.

No player has ever gone lower in a major.

What would winning the U.S. Open do for him? That 9-under number set a new record for lowest single-round score in relation to par in U.S. Open history and tied the low round in terms of score (Johnny Miller shot 8-under 63 in the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open).

Joining Johnson, McIlroy, Day and Willett in going home early are a host of fellow big names.

Henrik Stenson. Alex Noren. He was coasting along, playing par golf and hanging out at the top of the leaderboard. Of the group, it was Casey who had the wildest day. Schauffele went 26 consecutive holes without a bogey until he rammed his long birdie putt on No. 9 about 12 feet by the hole and narrowly missed the par putt. They were joined by Harman and Fleetwood, who each had a 70.

Casey nearly watched his U.S. Open hopes sink with a triple-bogey eight on the par-five 14th hole, and a bogey on the next that dropped him to two under for the tournament.

Rickie Fowler, on the verge of being left behind, rallied with three straight birdies and shot 68. Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., shot a second straight 76 and missed the cut.

"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", he said. He's never had a top 25 in a major, and hadn't even played in one since the 2015 PGA Championship until this week.

Two rounds down and two to go at the US Open at Erin Hills and we are still no closer to discovering the identity of the 2017 US Open champion.

A commercial blimp crashed to the ground and caught fire just outside the course Thursday, about the time the county health department was analyzing samples that confirmed evidence of the E. coli bacteria in water at a hydration station near the 12th hole.

The U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis., headed into the weekend with a four-way tie for the lead. He shot 73 and missed the cut by three.

"It would change my life, I know that", he said. "I just happened to be in the flawless spot".

"That's pretty neat to do it in the U.S. Open", said Koepka.

McIlroy, however, who had come into the tournament from an injury layoff after a niggling rib problem, said he was encouraged by his performance.

Amazingly it could have been even better if not for bogeys on the fourth and 10th, as well as a missed eagle putt from six feet on the 15th after he had driven the green on the 288-yard par four.

It also put him squarely in the mix to capture his first major.

"It was a good display, all my own fault, of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course".

The cut has been made at +1 ahead of the final two days of action at Erin Hills, Wisconsin. McIlroy could only take some optimism away from his finish. Friday's round included five birdies and two bogeys.

"If you look at the golf course and you even talk to me, Jason or Rory, this course sets up flawless for us", Johnson said. "Yeah, it was a bit of a roller coaster".
