10 injured after van plows into crowd near London Mosque

Amid the chaos and agitation surging through a crowd early Monday after a van plowed into pedestrians outside London's Finsbury Park Mosque, one person stepped in to protect the attacker, witnesses say: the mosque's imam.

Algeria on Monday strongly condemned the "hateful" terrorist attack that targeted Muslims near Finsbury Park mosque in northern London in Britain.

The driver, a 48-year-old man, was grabbed at the scene by locals and pinned down until police arrived.

Police said the driver was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder.

A man, who had earlier suffered a heart attack, died at the scene but it was not clear if his death was connected to the van attack. "These are the values that define this city", she said later outside Downing Street.

The BBC was among other media which identified the man arrested as Osborne, while London's Metropolitan Police said it would not name the suspect until he was charged.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called it an "horrific terrorist attack" while Muslim leaders linked the incident to a rise in Islamophobic crime.

May said police would assess security at mosques and provide any additional resources needed ahead of upcoming celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. "My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this terrible event", Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is an MP from the area, said as he paid a visit to the site.

"Extra officers are on duty in the area to help reassure the local community".

The incident happened outside the Muslim Welfare House, 100 metres (yards) around the corner from the Finsbury Park Mosque.

"We have a witness saying that the guy who did what he did, the driver of the van, said 'I did my bit, ' which means he's not mentally ill", Kacimi said.

It is believed that the man, who is said to live in Wales, was originally from Somerset, namely Weston-super-Mare.

Police investigating a van attack on Muslims outside a mosque announced they were searching a property in Cardiff as they confirmed a man arrested at the scene was suspected of terror offences. "Our prayers are with the victims".

Eight people were killed and 50 injured on June 3 when three Islamist terrorists drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people at nearby restaurants and bars in Borough Market.

Manchester was also hit on May 22 when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert. Five people were killed in that attack.

On March 22, a man drove a rented auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a policeman to death before being shot dead.
