84 great danes rescued from dilapidated mansion, woman charged

More than 80 Great Danes were rescued from a suspected puppy mill in New Hampshire Friday by police and officials with the Humane Society of the United States.

Rescuers found 84 Great Danes with limited access to food or water, "sliding on their own feces while walking and several had eyelids so swollen their eyes were red".

"I have never seen conditions this bad in more than 21 years of law enforcement", Chief Dean Rondeau said in a news release.

The seizure took more than 14 hours and the homeowner, 60-year-old Christina Fay, has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal neglect but more charges could be filed. The paper reported that Fay was selling the dogs for $2,500 through a kennel named De La Sang Monde, which has a Facebook page.

Hamrick said the dogs are now part of a criminal investigation, so until all proceedings wrap up, they will not be able to be adopted.

Fay is scheduled to be arraigned in the Ossipee Circuit Court on August 3. An emergency shelter was set up for the animals.

"I would encourage everyone who's offering to adopt and foster these guys that you're local community has hundreds of animals who could use the exactly the same service", Hamrick said.

"Words can not describe the absolute abhorrent conditions these animals were living in", Chief Dean Rondeau of the Wolfeboro Police Department said in a press release.

Hamrick said although they had a good idea of how many dogs were inside the home the rescue took much longer than expected.

Rondeau said Fay's bail conditions prohibit her from receiving, owning, possessing, housing or in any way being responsible for an animal until her case is adjudicated. Additional charges are possible, police said.

Neighbors previously made complaints about barking dogs. The ammonia stench in the home was so strong rescuers frequently had to go outside when their eyes and throat began to burn.

Police said the case is "about reckless conduct, abhorrent behavior toward animals over profit, and scofflaw attitude about business practices". Having more than 70 dogs is equal to lots of poo and [urine.] We have to clean every day... police arrive in my house before all the clean work, that is the reason why they found my place with poo and [urine].

They are the first wave of at-risk dogs coming to Bangor as the result of a collaboration with the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston, which successfully has been bringing dogs to ME for a few years, Southern Pines and the ASPCA, Coventry said.
