Andy Murray into semi-finals after taming Kei Nishikori

- Reuters picPARIS, June 7 ― World number one Andy Murray will carry the lesson of last year's US Open quarter-final defeat to Kei Nishikori into yesterday's French Open last eight clash against the Japanese, the 28-year-old has said.

He won the first set against Nishikori 6-1, led by two sets to one and looked poised to go a break up in the fourth when play was interrupted by a loud noise from the PA system.

After experiencing a five-set thriller in the third round dalayed by the rain, the eighth-seeded Nishikori regrouped himself and came back from one set down to see off Fernando Verdasco 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0.

Wawrinka, the third seed, booked a place in the quarter-finals for the fourth time with a comfortable 7-5, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 win over Gael Monfils, the last French player in the men's draw. "Once I found a bit of rhythm I started to control things a little bit more", Murray said on court afterwards.

Murray said: "Obviously for a couple of points after that I was sacked up, because I was frustrated at that moment".

"Whether it's Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak or Stan, I don't need to think about the amount of slams they have for any motivation".

"But the fact that Thiem took that set and started to be a little bit more [confident] and going a little bit more for his shot, he killed the match". "It's winning when you're not playing your best that is more impressive".

Murray came out on top in their last meeting in Paris but Wawrinka is not anxious about the result in 2016 and thinks he can get on top of the Scot this year. The Serbian tennis star is still in action at Roland Garros.

Pliskova reached the French Open quarterfinals for the first time with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Cepede Royg.

"I didn't feel like I played great tennis today".

- Fifth seed Elina Svitolina came back from 2-5 down in the third set to claim a 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory over Croatian qualifier Petra Martic.

Nishikori won a dramatic five-setter 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.

Hard question. So far when I have beaten a top guy, I have always played a way worse match the following day.

"Apart from at the US Open in '14, I'm definitely feeling the best on the court", Cilic said. His three Grand Slam titles matches Murray's total and at Wimbledon next month he will attempt to become only the ninth man in history to win all four of the sport's major trophies.
