Anti-terror probe opened in Paris car attack

Two metro stations on the Champs-Elysees, one of the city's most popular neighbourhoods for tourists, have been closed.

A bomb disposal police officer checks the vehicle, which rammed into a police van, in a sealed off area on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, on June 19, 2017.

A senior police officer and his girlfriend were both killed by a radicalized man at their home in the Paris suburbs a year ago.

France also has a history of deadly vehicle attacks: In July, an Islamic State-inspired assailant plowed through crowds gathered to celebrate Bastille Day, the national holiday, on a seaside promenade in Nice, killing 86.

Pierre-Henry Brandet, a spokesman for the French Interior Ministry, claimed the perpetrator had "most likely died" in the attack.

And in May a man with a hammer attacked a police officer at Notre Dame cathedral. Favereau wrote that the gendarmes smashed open the windows of the auto while it was in flames and dragged out its occupant. Authorities say a driver has rammed his auto into a police vehicle in the Champs-Elysees shopping district.

The weapons and explosives found in the vehicle "could potentially blow this auto up", he said. Twitter users initially reported being evacuated and seeing a auto on fire.

The "radicalised" attacker was later pictured being stripped naked by bomb squad officers. France's anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation.

WJC President Ronald Lauder said in a statement Monday that the organization stands together with the people of London "in confronting another awful act of terror".

In April, police officer Xavier Jugele, 39, was shot dead on the Champs-Élysées.

The suspect was wearing a white shirt and dark shorts and prone on his stomach on the avenue.

France's interior minister Gerard Collomb later confirmed the terrorist was dead. That incident recalled two other attacks on soldiers providing security at prominent locations around Paris, one at the Louvre museum in February and one at Orly airport in March.
