Castile trial had video evidence _ but not of key seconds

The shooting drew national attention after the victim's girlfriend live-streamed the bloody aftermath on social media, and it led to protests that have fueled debate across the country over police use of force in encounters with minorities.

"We must all own the tragedy endured by Mr. Castile's family and community - until Americans demand greater accountability for the discrimination and violence of a drug war prosecuted in their name, it won't be the last".

Castile's family stormed out of the courtroom after the verdict was read, and the city of St. Anthony swiftly announced plans to dismiss Officer Jeronimo Yanez, despite his acquittal.

The jury of seven men and five women, 10 of whom were white and two of whom were black, sided with the officer after deliberating for more than 25 hours spanning five days, acquitting Yanez on all charges.

Yanez testified that he stopped Castile because he resembled a suspect in a local convenience store robbery days earlier.

If you read carefully, you'll note that it appears that the officer shot Castile for doing exactly what the officer told him to do. "It's a sad state of affairs when this type of criminal conduct is condoned simply because Yanez is a policeman", Reynolds said. The reading of the verdicts triggered a loud expletive from Valerie Castile, Philando's mother, and sobbing could be heard as the family made its way out of the courthouse. "I know that if he could, he would take back what he did, and we all wish, and he would too, that this never happened", Choi said. "But nevertheless the system continues to fail black people", she said.

There was also video of the shooting captured from a camera mounted on the dashboard in Yanez's squad vehicle.

The roadside memorial at the site of Castile's death saw an influx of visitors, flowers, and signs. They argued that the officer overreacted and that Castile was not a threat. However, before Castile could complete his sentence, Yanez pulled out his gun and said: "Don't pull it out".

The jury cleared the policeman of second degree manslaughter and two counts of felony of intentional discharge of a unsafe weapon for endangering the safety of Ms Reynolds and her four-year-old daughter.

The event was initially planned to be a Father's Day celebration, but that changed when the officer was acquitted of manslaughter in Castile's death, according to organizers. Therefore, Friday night's large-scale protests in St. Paul were expected in the wake of the verdict. With Castile's hand on his gun, Yanez said he had to act.

Police say they got a report that the parade route was being blocked and officers arrived on bicycles.

However, within a minute of pulling Castile over, Yanez opened fired, later telling investigators the go-to excuse, "I thought I was gonna die". Paul area after the verdict.

In the U.S., legal cases are usually decided by a panel of 12 people sworn to give a verdict based on evidence submitted to a court.
