Doctors 'encouraged' by Scalise's improvement

Medstar Washington Hospital Centre released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said in the statement.

His family said they appreciate the support they've received from lawmakers and the president, and are thankful for the bravery of the special agents. The hospital said Thursday that Scalise had improved in the past 24 hours but that his condition remained critical and he would need additional operations that would keep him in the hospital "for some time".

Louisiana member Mr Scalise, 51, was one of five people shot when gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire as the Republican team practised for a charity game against Democrats in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday. He said that, when Scalise arrived at the hospital, he was "at imminent risk of death". He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said. A lobbyist, a congressional aide, and two Capitol Police officers were also injured in the shooting.

Doctors say the bullet entered his left hip damaging some of his organs, and causing internal bleeding.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Sava made it clear the situation was even more dire than it first seemed, but that now "an excellent recovery is a good possibility" for the congressman, though he faces more surgeries and weeks more in the hospital before he can begin his recovery.

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. Hodgkinson died after being wounded by return fire.

Vice President Pence on Thursday visited House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) in a Washington hospital, where he is recovering from a gunshot wound.

At her weekly news conference, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "personally heartbroken" over Scalise's injuries.
