Jeremy Corbyn condemns "awful" suspected terror attack outside a north-London mosque

Jeremy Corbyn condemns

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said it was not yet clear whether the man who died at the scene was killed because of the attack.

Scotland Yard said searches were also being carried out at a property in Cardiff.

(Vatican Radio) English Cardinal Vincent Nichols joined religious and political leaders on Monday in condemning an attack on Muslims leaving the Finsbury Park mosque in north London.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the attack is being treated by the police "as a terrorist incident".

The incident comes weeks after a van hit pedestrians on London Bridge and knife-wielding attackers killed eight people nearby.

Citing witnesses, the Guardian reports that after deliberately targeting pedestrians, the driver "got out of the van and shouted "I want to kill Muslims" before onlookers pinned him to the ground".

"We urge calm as the investigation establishes the full facts, and in these last days of Ramadan, pray for those affected and for justice". Police said the incident was "clearly an attack on Muslims". "I am a Muslim".

Scotland Yard said they had arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

"We do not know how many were injured or killed, but our prayers are with the victims and families".

Londoners bearing flowers and messages of solidarity gathered at the spot where a man ploughed a van into Muslims leaving prayers at a mosque, the fourth terror strike in Britain in four months.

Prime Minister Theresa May, who chaired a meeting of the COBRA emergency committee, condemned the attack as "every bit as sickening" as the recent atrocities in London and Manchester.

A police officer detains a man near the scene of the attack.

Khan, who vowed "zero tolerance" for hate crimes, said "we will not allow these terrorists to succeed ... we will stay a strong city".

Security Minister Ben Wallace said the suspect was not known to the security services.

"Extra policing resources have been deployed across London in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan".

The attack hits a community already feeling targeted in the fallout from the London Bridge killings and other attacks blamed on Islamic extremists.
