Moment of silence for London fire victims

Moment of silence for London fire victims

Police say 79 people are now dead or missing after the fire at Grenfell Tower in west London.

Investigators are "working tirelessly.to establish just how many we believe are missing", Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy told reporters.

The death toll was first given as 12 before being revised up to 17, then 30, then 58.

May and her ministers have said they will do all they can to help those left homeless after the blaze and make sure other high-rise buildings, usually home to poorer people, are checked and safe.

Cdr Cundy warned of the potential "terrible reality" that some people may never be identified due to the intensity of the fire.

"This is an incredible distressing time for families and they have my commitment that we will do this as quickly as we possibly can", he said.

Cundy says the new number may change as investigation continues.

Khan described the fire as a "preventable accident that didn't need to happen", adding that the "tragedy we're seeing is a effect of the mistakes and neglect from politicians from the council and from the government".

He added that teams and families of missing loved ones must prepare for "the bad reality" that some of those who died in the fire may never be identified due to the intensity of the fire.
