Opposition up in arms against Centre over Presidential nominee Kovind

The Shiv Sena taunted its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the party should focus on bringing stability to "sensitive areas" such as Kashmir and Darjeeling, rather than worrying about mid-term elections and completing a full five-year term in Maharashtra, Hindustan Times reported.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that if someone is trying to make a Dalit a President with the goal of gaining a vote bank then we are not with them.

However, he said a final decision on the BJP candidate would be made at a meeting of party leaders scheduled to take place June 20 in Mumbai. "Uddhavji will recommend his name to Amit Shah when he calls on him at "Matoshree" (Thackeray's residence) on Sunday", Raut said.

The Shiv Sena on Monday remained non-committal on whether or not it will support the BJPs nominee for the Presidential election, Ram Nath Kovind.

"It seems they have a lot of money to fight mid-term elections". In 1997, Sena propped up former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) TN Seshan as its Presidential candidate against KR Narayanan. But the Shiv Sena will ensure that it will make the government "cry" for not paying attention to the farmers' problems, he added.

Shah defended the approach of his party in meeting opposition leaders over presidential election without proposing a name.

The BJP-led NDA (including Sena) has total of 52 MPs.

On the first occasion, then-Sena leader Bal Thackeray suppported Patil because she was the first Maharashtrian and woman to occupy the top constitutional post.

The political atmosphere in the state is highly charged with the recent farmers agitation, an increasingly confrontationist ally, a belligerent opposition and even pressure from within party ranks.

Paswan said his party will stand by the Prime Minister's decision while the Samajwadi Party is understood to have favoured a politician as the new President.

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena today demanded that the old currency notes to the tune of Rs 2,771 crore lying with the district central cooperative (DCC) banks should be exchanged by the Reserve Bank.

Ahead of the much-anticipated face-off between India and Pakistan in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the BJP chief categorically stated that India and Pakistan will not feature in any bilateral cricket series but would continue to participate in worldwide tournaments.
