Proposed DUP deal would not undermine Good Friday Agreement, insists May

It is a week since DUP leader Arlene Foster visited Downing Street for talks with Theresa May, with reports that a final agreement is being held up by discussions over extra funding for Northern Ireland.

The newly appointed Foreign Affairs Minister said an agreement should not be an accord struck only between the two largest parties - the DUP and Sinn Féin. Political deals in particular demand careful thought before they're made and the Conservative agreement with the DUP is one that requires more than most.

Leo Varadkar had expressed concern about a possible deal between the Conservative party and the DUP.

During previous talks processes, the smaller parties have claimed they have been marginalised.

Her comments follow warnings by the nationalist parties, Sinn Fein and the SDLP, and the cross-community Alliance Party, that a deal with the DUP would undermine the Government's attempts to restore the power-sharing executive at Stormont.

The participants have until June 29 to reach a deal that would see devolution returned or they face the prospect of direct rule being reimposed from Westminster.

"All of the messaging I am getting is people are up for a deal", he said.

Theresa May has still not secured a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to allow her Government programme to survive a Commons vote, a day before the Prime Minister sets out her legislative measures in the Queen's Speech.

But the unexpected weak performance has plunged Britain into a political crisis and left May battling to unite both wings of the Conservative Party - those who want a so-called "hard Brexit" and those who did not want to leave the European Union in the first place.

The Sinn Féin National Chairperson also accused the Irish Government under Enda Kenny of a "dereliction of public leadership".

"Over the coming months, I will work to ensure these negotiations protect and advance Ireland's interests and deliver the best outcome for our people, for our businesses and for our island". "So I'm afraid to say there is no goodwill towards her".

Asked when the proposed confidence and supply arrangement the DUP will be signed off, she said discussions with the party were ongoing.

May told journalists the United Kingdom government remained "absolutely steadfast" in its commitment to the Belfast Agreement and that discussions were continuing with the DUP over a confidence and supply agreement, which would see the unionist party's 10 MPs back May's government on key votes.
