Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

"He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement".

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said in the statement.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family. The hospital's chief trauma doctor has said Scalise faced "an imminent risk of death" at the time he was brought in.
