Shiv Sena non-committal on Presidential nominee

"It was a very positive meeting and local issues were not discussed", said a Sena leader privy to the development.

On Monday, the BJP announced that its candidate for the presidential polls that will be held on July 17 is Bihar governor Ramnath Kovind. It will meet Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday. Later Sena will decide whether to offer support to the candidate.

That meeting would be followed by another with BJP ministers in Maharashtra government at the chief minister's residence "Varsha".

Sources close to the BJP leadership had earlier told News18 that Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Naresh Agarwal met Union minister Venkaiah Naidu and communicated that they would want a "political person" in the Raisina Hill.

Mumbai: BJP chief Amit Shah told reporters on Saturday that the party will focus on each and every seat (Assembly and Parliament) so that it gets a majority on its own.

"Shah informed him about the BJP choice and also sought the Shiv Sena's support for Kovind's candidature", Raut said. "I think the Government of India is confused about the current relationship with Pakistan", congress leader Meem Afzal told ANI.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday backed party president Amit Shah's statement opposing India's participation in any bilateral cricket series with Pakistan, while saying the decision came in view of the active support by Islamabad in terror activity.

SHIV SENA president Uddhav Thackeray Monday took a cautious stand on the BJP's decision to field a Dalit face as the Presidential nominee, stating that this was being done to pander to Dalit votes. The Sena chief agreed, contradicting the BJP, which supported NDA candidate P.A. Sangma.

"We wish them all the best... we are not perturbed about winning or losing mid-term elections in Maharashtra..." The value of each Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP's vote is 708 and value of vote of MLAs is decided by population of that state.

During his address, Thackeray took potshots at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his remarks that some political parties were behind the recent agitation by farmers.

Against the backdrop of a speculation that mid-term polls could be in offing in Maharashtra, he said Sena is not unduly anxious about the snap polls, but is more concerned about suicides being committed by farmers.
