UK police: 58 confirmed or presumed dead after London blaze

A senior United Kingdom government minister said Sunday that he believed the insulation apparently used in a recent refurbishment of the London high-rise devastated by a blaze is banned in Britain for buildings above a certain height.

A key question about the disaster was what role exterior cladding.

The cladding used on Grenfell Tower was banned in the UK, Philip Hammond has said. Hands cautioned that officials don't yet have exact details about the renovation that ended just a year ago.

"My understanding is the cladding in question, this flammable cladding which is banned in Europe and the United States, is also banned here", Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond told the BBC's "The Andrew Marr Show".

Labour Party lawmaker David Lammy said that the government and the police should immediately seize all documents relating to the building's renovation to prevent the destruction of evidence that could show criminal wrongdoing.

The Prime Minister is facing particular scrutiny over the role of her new chief of staff, Gavin Barwell, who served as housing minister until he lost his seat in last week's snap general election.

He said all records - including emails, minutes of meetings, correspondence with contractors, safety assessments, specifications and reports - must be kept intact.

In a statement they said: 'The government has acted to improve fire regulation and safety, including the recommendations made by the Coroner following the Lakanal House Fire. On Friday, Metropolitan Police Commander Start Cundy said he hoped the number would not reach "triple figures".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that he had attended an "incredibly moving" service at St.

Frustration has been mounting in recent days as information about those still missing in the blaze has been scanty and efforts to find temporary housing for the hundreds of now-homeless tower residents have faltered.

Earlier on Saturday Prime Minister Theresa May met victims of the blaze at Downing Street, amid criticism she had not seen them in the immediate wake of the tragedy.

"Equally, there may be people who thankfully may have managed to escape the fire and for whatever reason have not let their family or friends or police know", he said.

Some families who live in low-rise blocks adjoining the tower, who were initially given hotel accommodation, were told on Monday they should return to their homes, despite the absence of hot water, and residents' concerns about pollution and the risk of falling debris.

The U.S. Green Building Council, which oversees the industry-leading certification known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), said in a statement to The Associated Press that the Grenfell tragedy holds safety lessons.

The 23-year-old Alhajali is the only victim of the Grenfell Tower fire to be officially named.

"It is hard to escape a very somber national mood", Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

Cundy explained that one of the reasons identification has been so hard is because dental records are needed from victims who hailed from different countries around the world.

The PM also pledged another £1.5 million for mental health support for the firefighters and other emergency workers who dealt with trauma during the horrific blaze.

Search and recovery crews have been working in the tower since last Wednesday's fire.
