Scalise has been an avid participant in the game since arriving in Congress in 2008.

The 66 year-old, who apparently volunteered with Bernie Sanders' failed presidential campaign, wounded four people including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, before being shot and killed by U.S. Capitol Police.

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a Republican congressional baseball practice.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that might happen or when Scalise, 51, will be able to leave the hospital.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Doctors treating wounded House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise have upgraded his condition from "critical" to "serious".

Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a D.C. -area hospital. Although "infection is a significant risk", the physician said, "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent. The fact that his injuries brought him close to death was not widely known initially.

"We are encouraged by improvement of his condition over the last 36 hours", Sava said.

He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

"That was tough for me", Duncan said.

"Somebody asked me 'who do you think is going to win tonight?'", said Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, who witnessed yesterday's shooting.

Doctors attending to Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana said Friday they feel better about his condition after he was shot by a gunman.

A Secret Servicer officer was injured Wednesday evening by a vehicle he was trying to stop from disrupting President Donald Trump's motorcade back from the hospital where two victims of the attack on a congressional baseball practice are being treated.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

"We talked about it in our dugout", Pascrell said.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love, and the people who call it home", President Trump said in a video address to the crowd. "We understand he is lucky to be alive and we owe it to these incredible individuals and Matt's fighting spirit and grit".

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.

The FBI and the Alexandria Police Department said in a joint statement Thursday that federal authorities had examined the rifle and handgun recovered from the scene and determined that Hodgkinson had bought them from licensed sellers. They said he obtained the weapons via legal means, Newsweek reported.
