Van crash near London mosque kills 1, hurts 10, police say

The BBC reports that Osborne "was held on suspicion of attempted murder and later further arrested over alleged terror offences".

Darren Osborne, a 47-year-old father of four from Wales, was identified by British media Monday as the country recovers from what the country's authorities are treating as the third terrorist incident in less than a month.

Scotland Yard said searches are being carried out at a residential address in Cardiff in connection with the attack.

The vehicle swerved into the group of worshippers, mainly of North and West African origin, after they left prayers in the early hours of Monday at the Muslim Welfare House and the nearby Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, one of the biggest in Britain, injuring 11.

A 48-year-old white man was driving a rented van as he rammed into a group of pedestrians near the Finsbury Park Mosque, in North London, killing a man and wounding some 10 others, all of whom were worshipers.

The van had hit people assisting an elderly man who had collapsed, and who later died.

CNN Terrorism Analyst Paul Cruickshank said Monday afternoon: "The police need to get a sense of the motivation of the culprit or culprits and mechanics of the attack before they make that call".

Video posted on social media appears to show police and bystanders surrounding an injured person on the ground after a van ploughed into worshippers near a London mosque.

"This is an extremely hard time for our city, but I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant".

Police arrested the van's driver, but were trying to determine whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.

At around 3 a.m. a London police spokesman told CNN it was "too early" to say if it was a terrorist attack.

One witness told CNN it was clear that the attacker at Finsbury Park had deliberately targeted Muslims. "And the reason that so many people have turned up today from all sorts of different faith communities is because we want to stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters".

"I just can't believe it".

British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack "on innocent people" and declared that Britain would stop at nothing to defeat extremism.

Locals massing at barriers, angry at police, people confused about what has happened.

According to the council in a follow-up tweet, the van struck the victims closer to the Muslim Welfare House.
