12 cities added to Justice Department program meant to lower crime

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it will come to Buffalo's aid in trying to figure out why violent crimes are being committed.

Sessions was joined by the heads of the FBI, ATF and the Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, who praised law enforcement officials in the audience for the risks they take to protect the public. "The Department of Justice will work with American cities suffering from serious violent crime problems".

The department said it chose cities that have higher-than-average rates of violence and showed receptiveness to receiving assistance.

Buffalo is one of 12 cities nationwide joining a newly formed "National Public Safety Partnership", (PSP) announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"Diagnostic Teams will assess the local factors driving increased violent crime, and will help local leaders develop strategies to address those factors, over a period of up to 18 months", Sessions said.

Buffalo was the only city chosen in NY.

Baltimore and Chicago, two large cities where violent crime is increasing, were notably not on the list.

DOJ said Tuesday the new National Public Safety Partnership, dubbed "PSP", initiative comes on the heels of President Donald Trump's February executive order on public safety. "The preliminary data for the first half of 2016 shows further increases with large cities seeing an average increase in murders of almost 22% compared with the same period the year before".

The department will help local authorities study crime patterns and create specially tailored plans to reduce gang and gun violence, he said.

Homicides were up slightly in 2016, compared to 2015, according to city police data. "Those have been our conversations", Brown said.

The first round of cities chosen for the new initiative, the National Public Safety Partnership, are Baton Rouge; Birmingham, Ala.; Buffalo; Cincinnati; Houston; Indianapolis; Jackson, Tenn.; Kansas City, Mo.; Lansing, Mich.; Memphis; Springfield, Ill.; and Toledo.
