All Eyes on Georgia as Desperate Democrats Seek Win in Trump Era

A special election run-off for a suburban Atlanta seat in Congress looked set for a tight finish on Tuesday, with polls showing a very narrow lead for the Democratic candidate seeking to take a district held by Republicans since the 1970s.

That reflects the attention and energy surrounding what has become the most expensive House race in US history as both parties vie for a key victory early in Donald Trump's presidency.

Demographics, as well as Trump's election and the fact that he selected Price to serve as Health and Human Services secretary, have contributed to a "tremendous amount of energy on both sides in the district, but particularly among Democrats", said Chip Lake, a Republican strategist in Georgia and former chief of staff on Capitol Hill.

Now that the votes are in for this year's most closely watched race in the nation, find out how the 6th Congressional District special election was won and what it means.

Despite the outpouring of money (making this the most expensive House race in us history), the national attention, and the tens of thousands of doors knocked, Ossoff was unable to flip the seat in the historically conservative district.

Republicans could tout the victory as evidence that backlash to Trump won't win the House for Democrats.

Voters in the southern US state of Georgia are choosing their new representative in the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a special election that is being closely watched as a test of Republican strength under the Trump administration and the party's prospects of holding its majority in House next year. Republicans are favored to hold a fourth seat up Tuesday in SC, while Democrats already held their lone open seat in a California special election.

The president even weighed in on the race, although Handel distanced herself from him on the trail.

The result in a historically conservative district still offers Republicans a warning that President Donald Trump's tenuous standing will dominate the looming campaign cycle.

Handel, like Trump, has campaigned on tougher immigration laws and simplifying the tax code.

In his concession speech, Ossoff told supporters that tonight represented "the beginning of something much bigger than this". Handel and Trump want to overhaul it. They fell short in other special congressional elections earlier this year in Kansas and Montana.

The race is the first real opportunity Democrats saw as a chance to flip a district from Republican to Democrat.

Ossoff received criticism for not being able to vote for himself because he lives with his girlfriend outside the district. But regardless of the outcome, Democrat Jon Ossoff's campaign provided a long-term model and new wave of hope for grassroots activists who are looking to 2018 and beyond. That drop in GOP presidential enthusiasm unpopularity made the seat a prime target for Democrats.

However, while Democrats had motivated their base and won over skeptical Republicans, the conservative slant of district proved too much even for the almost unprecedented resources that Democrats invested in the race, even flying in volunteers for last minute doorknocking as local television stations had been saturated by 30-second advertisements.

"Politics does not have to be about fear and hate and deception and division", he said, avoiding mentioning President Donald Trump directly, as is his custom, but blistering "those cynics in Washington, D.C".

But even with that pedigree, Trump barely edged Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 6th in November, giving Ossoff his opening once Price was confirmed.

But early results appear to show Handel has performed better than expected in Democratic-leaning portions of Georgia's sixth district.

"I had a lot of guilt about the election and Trump winning", Amanda Kelly, a stay-at-home mom who campaigned for Ossoff before the April 18 general election, told Politico.

An Ossoff win would be a proof point suggesting that Democrats are on the right track. She welcomed him for a private fundraiser in late April. She thanked the president in her victory remarks on Tuesday night, getting loud cheers from her supporters.
