Asked about assault on protesters, Kerala top cop cites threat to PM

There was an extremist threat to the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent Kerala visit where he inaugurated the Kochi Metro. There was a terror module here during his visit. The VVIP visit was carried out under the cloud of a terror threat, which could not have disclosed at that time, Senkumar said. "But can not disclose much of the details about it", Senkumar had said the other day.Now the chief minister also had made it clear that there was intelligence warning".

Asked about the 'terror threat, ' Senkumar said he could not elaborate further.

Vijayan, however, refused to react to the DGP's remarks justifying the June 16 police action on people protesting near the Kerala High Court premises in Kochi against an LPG terminal coming up at Puthuvype.

He told mediapersons in Kochi on Tuesday that deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Yatish Chandra was acting on the ground and was right in dispersing an unruly mob, which could potentially threaten the safe passage of the prime minister.

"Yes, we had reports of a security threat to the PM when he was here but that was not made public", Vijayan said. Modi was in Kochi on Saturday, June 17, for the launch of Kochi Metro.

Senkumar dismissed the allegations against Yatish Chandra that he had ordered lathicharge against the protesters at Puthuvype on Sunday. "If the government is trying to subdue the protest using police force, it will be disappointed".

His statement comes amid demand from the opposition parties and protesters for stringent action against the police for the lathicharge.

Earlier, they had said they would not attend the meeting scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram.
