BJP Parliamentary Board Meeting On; Oppn for 'Secular' Pick

BJP Parliamentary Board Meeting On; Oppn for 'Secular' Pick

Even as the Shiv Sena and the Peoples Democratic Party supported the candidature of BJP's presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday, the Opposition was still in talks over its proposed joint candidate against Mr. Kovind.

Though the Bharatiya Janata Party chief did not disclose the names of any candidate for the post of President, he sought Thackeray's support for the NDA nominee who would be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Amit Shah had met me and requested our support for their candidate".

The meeting also hold significance as the Shiv Sena has warned of taking an "independent stand" on backing a candidate in the presidential election.

The letter is quite humorous, as it says, "We would like to register a record on his (Uddhav Thackeray) behalf, "for announcing number of times that his party Shiv Sena would withdraw their support from the Maharashtra government".

A final call on the anti-Kovind candidate will be taken at a meeting of the opposition front on June 22, Raja said.

Similarly, NDA's ally the Republican Party of India (A) leader Ramdas Athawale also welcomed Shiv Sena's support to the Dalit candidate. During his address, Thackeray took potshots at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his remarks that some political parties were behind the recent agitation by farmers. "If they are doing it for winning across the country then we will have to think differently".

BJP President Amit Shah arrives at party headquarters for BJP Parliamentary Board meeting scheduled to take place at 12 noon in Delhi to discuss its nominee for the upcoming Presidential elections.

Sena has got away with supporting Pratibha Patil, a Congress candidate, on the basis of her being a Maharashtrian, and Pranab Mukherjee because he called at Matoshree seeking support, meant it has broken ranks twice in the past.

He claimed Shah had told him that Swaminathan's name could not make it further due to his frail health.

On Friday, Shiv Sena had said it would recommend eminent agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan's name for the highest post if the BJP was not ready for the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's candidature. "The BJP has achieved in just three years what could not be done in the past 50 years", Shah said.

The Mumbai visit is part of the country-wide tour programme undertaken by Shah from April to September, party sources said.

Lauding Modi for enacting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law, the BJP leader said nobody else had the "daring or capability" to do it.
