Brussels train station bomber had Islamic State ties, prosecutors say

At 8.44pm he returned to the middle of the group, shouting and grabbing his suitcase.

"Fortunately nobody was hurt", he added.

"Meanwhile, the bag exploded a second time more violently", Mr Van der Sypt said. OZ then walked away and there was a second, slightly larger explosion, at which point OZ moved upstairs and yelled "Allahu Akbar" at a soldier, who subsequently shot and killed him. "The latter died on the spot as a result of his injuries", he said. "It was clear he wanted to cause much more damage than what happened", Van der Sypt said. He said the man was not known to authorities to be involved in any terror activities, but the prosecutor did not comment on whether he had a criminal record.

Authorities revealed that the attacker detonated a suitcase containing nails and gas bottles. The perpetrators of that attack were from an ISIS cell based in Molenbeek.

Belgian will keep its current terror alert level at three on a scale of four, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Wednesday. Police said the situation is "under control". We have avoided an attack that could have been a great deal worse.

"We are not allowing ourselves to be intimidated by terrorists", he added. "We will go on living our lives as normal".

Belgian authorities have carried out a host raids in the area over the past year.

He said the man appeared to be 30 to 35 years of age.

It lists him as hailing from the coastal Moroccan city of Nador and a former student of the Mohamed I University in Oujda, where he graduated in 2002.

Posts on the page showed an interest in Islamic charity but no obvious support for militant organisations.

Isis has not claimed responsibility for the attempted terror attack, which bore similarities to several attacks carried out in its name and followed the group's call for global atrocities during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The man suspected of setting off the Central station bomb has been identified as a 36-year-old Moroccan from a city district that has spawned a number of jihadist attackers.

The Belgian capital, home to the headquarters of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union, took a heavy hit to its tourist industry after last year's deadly attacks at Brussels airport and in the Brussels metro. In Tuesday's incident, visitors and residents out enjoying a hot summer's evening on the ornate Renaissance town square, the Grand Place, close to Central Station, were cleared quickly away by police.Smoke billowed through the 1930s station's marble halls, sending people fleeing, well aware of last year's attacks at Brussels airport and on the metro, as well as of a string of Islamic State-inspired assaults, most recently in Britain."Such isolated acts will continue in Brussels, in Paris and elsewhere".

The suspect came from Molenbeek and was carrying a bomb armed with nails and gas canisters, officials said.

A police officer patrols outside the prime ministers office in Brussels on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

There have been attacks in Paris and London in recent days, including the attack by a van driver who tried to run down worshippers outside a London mosque.

Central station re-opened on Wednesday morning.
