Family declines autopsy for USA student released by North Korea

Al Franken and others when he said in a statement that "the barbaric treatment of Otto Warmbier by the North Korean regime amounts to the murder of a USA citizen".

A coroner hasn't reached a conclusion about the cause of death for a 22-year-old American college student who died in Cincinnati less than a week after he was released from North Korea in a coma.

The family thanked the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treating him but said, "Unfortunately, the terrible torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today".

U.S. student Otto Warmbier (left) died on Monday at age 22, just days after his release from North Korea in a vegetative state (right) following 17 months in custody.

The coroner's office also reviewed medical records from University of Cincinnati Medical Center and AeroMed Management Group.

Earlier the coroner's office said it had received Warmbier's body for an autopsy examination and was expecting to release preliminary findings later on Tuesday or on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Otto Warmbier's family have said they will not seek an autopsy on his body, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office in OH said in a statement carried by news channel CNN.

Mr Warmbier, 22, died on Monday after being medically evacuated to the United States last week after suffering from severe brain damage, with US President Donald Trump blaming Pyongyang's "brutal regime" for his plight.

He says Warbier's treatment by North Korea "could be a crime against humanity".

Previously, Trump told CBS he would "not be happy" if North Korea tested a nuclear device, though he did not specify whether he would take action in response. -North Korean tensions aggravated by dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since a year ago in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Fowle, 59, is one of 16 Americans who have been imprisoned by the reclusive state over the last two decades, including three who remain detained. In the wake of Warmbier's death, Chan said the company will continue that suspension. Fred Warmbier, the student's father, has said he disbelieves this account. "We got three there today that have charges, trumped-up charges against them, and we have got to figure out whether it's best to allow people to do that and then end up in a situation where we're doing everything we can as a nation to get them out", he said.

The China-based travel agency that organized a trip to North Korea for an American college student who died after being released in a coma from North Korean detention said it would no longer take USA citizens to the country. "And frankly, if he were brought home sooner, I think the results would have been a lot different".

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said after Trump's tweet that the US had seen "positive movement" with China in response to the president's efforts, adding that the USA would continue to seek greater cooperation with China on Pyongyang. "At least I know China tried!"

When asked whether the Trump administration plans to retaliate against North Korea, Spicer said,"We have been very forceful in our political and economic pressure that has been applied in North Korea".

The government of China, North Korea's main ally, said Warmbier's death was a tragedy.
