Finsbury Park imam: 'I'm no hero' for protecting mosque attacker

Finsbury Park imam: 'I'm no hero' for protecting mosque attacker

Police were searching an address where Osborne was said to be living before the attack. "We stand with the Muslim community - you are not alone, we share your pain and we will not let you down".

Britain was coming to terms with the aftermath of its fourth bloody assault in three months following early Monday's van attack on worshippers leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque in north London.

■ THE son of the director at the van hire firm whose vehicle was used in the mosque attack is thought to have been arrested over abusive comments on Twitter. "I poked him but he didn't respond so I called (police)".

"I know him. I have lived here for five years". They gave no further details on his Singapore connection. It was a Pontyclun Van Hire van.

"If I ever needed anything, he would come. The officers' assessment was that no offences were disclosed".

The man in custody was yesterday identified as dad-of-four Darren Osborne from Cardiff, South Wales.

Osborne, 47, who was described as having been "troubled for a long time" by his family in a statement, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but Scotland Yard said he was later arrested for the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder. "It still hasn't really sunk in", reports the BBC. We are devastated for the families.

Osborne's neighbours in Pentwyn said that over the weekend, he had called a 12-year-old Muslim an "inbred" and was thrown out of a local pub for getting drunk, "cursing Muslims and saying he would do some damage". "It is madness. It is obviously sheer madness".

He said the response of the community had been "extraordinary" starting from the people who were attending a sick man on the street, who later died. Muslims were gathered to help an elderly man who had just collapsed.

The London Ambulance Service took nine people to three London hospitals. According to witnesses, Osborne shouted, "I want to kill all Muslims" as he drove a van into a crowd largely made up of worshippers out for Ramzan prayers.

Organisers, who arranged the event under the banner of "No To Islamophobia - Unity with Finsbury Park Mosque", say the attack did not take place in a vacuum but occurred in a climate of sensationalist and irresponsible attempts to demonise Muslims by sections of the press, commentators and some politicians. He was asked to leave quietly and he went.

"He came in here and he was just staring before he started shouting", he said.

Speaking to Sky News, Mahmoud said: "My faith is an integral part of me and it dictates everything about my decision-making, but at the same time as a human I can't allow another human to be harmed unnecessarily".

The suspected terrorist was apprehended by bystanders with a fearless Imam shielding him from angry crowds in a bid to "extinguish any flames of anger" until cops arrived.

Mr Henry said the community was "absolutely shocked" and it was a mixed community where he had never seen any trouble. "It hasn't happened on our own doorstep but it has because the guy comes from here".
