Five missing after Grenfell Tower fire found 'safe and well'

A further five people who were registed as missing, presumed dead, have been confirmed to be safe and well.

Of that 79, police have identified five people.

"Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore sadly I have to assume that they are dead", he said.

Police Commander Stuart Cundy said police will seek criminal prosecutions if the evidence warrants.

"Where offences have been committed, I will do everything in my gift to make sure they are brought to justice", he said.

"If I identify.an issue that is a risk to public safety, we will be sharing that immediately with the relevant authorities", he said.

"I do think there may be some change to that number", Cundy told reporters.

"I've heard stories of heroism, from Christians, from Muslims and from others, looking after their brothers and sisters, their neighbours and doing the job that we expect from this brilliant community because of the fantastic community that is here in this part of London".

"There is also a real possibility that there may be people in the building that no-one knows are missing".

"We have been from the top to the bottom of Grenfell Tower".

Members of the emergency services work inside burnt out remains of the Grenfell apartment tower in North Kensington, London, Britain, June 18, 2017.

Distressed women were seen hugging after the silence.

Opposition politicians also say the government ignored recommendations from a 2013 review after another London fire killed six people. "The work to search the building is challenging, but naturally could never be done quickly enough for those now having to live with the uncertainty of knowing where their loved ones are".

The latest figures from NHS England show that 17 patients are still being treated in four London hospitals.

Prime Minister Theresa May, already facing severe political problems trying to form a government after losing her majority in Parliament, was heckled when she visited the site on Thursday and criticized for taking too long to meet with survivors, the AP reported.

There were about 600 people living in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower when fire swept through most of the building in the early hours of 14 June.

The photos, captured by a specialist police recovery team, show flats where everyone has been accounted for.

With blackened rubble strewn across the floor and exposed pipes, one room is unrecognisable as a home until a bath and sink come into view - the dividing wall destroyed completely by the fire.
