Heat wave hits Arizona, California on 1st day of summer

Tuesday's forecast for Phoenix included a high of 120 degrees, and the flights that are affected were to take off between 3 and 6 p.m. MT.

And it was so hot that at least 50 flights have been canceled this week at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Phoenix is expected to be 119 degrees on Tuesday.

"As the ambient temperature at a particular airport increases, in this case into the [high 40s] at Phoenix, the amount of lift and power in aircraft engines declines, and the result is that for any given runway length, you can carry less and less payload", said Robert Mann, an industry analyst and former airline executive.

Most of the nearby cities in the region would face temperature up to 110 degrees, while the problem arises in the places where the temperature is more than 120 degrees, and Phoenix will be the first to face that rage from nature.

Kurt Dickson, an emergency room doctor at Banner Health in Phoenix, said people have a range of heat illnesses during the summer months, including fatigue, heatstroke and severe sun burns.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Phoenix was 122 Fahrenheit degrees (50 Celsius degrees) in 1990.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kate Guillet said the temperatures are expected to remain hot through the rest of the week - though Tuesday should be the peak day for heat.

Randall Cerveny, a professor of geographical sciences at Arizona State University, said summer heat is necessary for a monsoon.

The main burn center in Phoenix has issued a warning to people to be careful around auto interiors and pavement and with their pets.

Forecasters are also predicting a high of 116 degrees in Las Vegas and tourists are being warned to be careful outside and to stay alert.

The disruptions came Tuesday.

Other regions in the US southwest have seen scorching, record-breaking temperatures in the past few days, prompting excessive heat alerts.

Arizona, Nevada and California saw dramatic temperatures Tuesday and researchers say deadly heat waves like this one were going to grow more frequent. Unless actionable steps are taken to reduce carbon emissions, a majority of the world's population-up to 75 percent of people-could experience a deadly heat wave by 2100. Phoenix radio station KSLX handed out the protective coverings to protect dogs' paws from the hot pavement, as temperatures in Phoenix are forecasted to hit 120 degrees.

There are certain truths that accompany summer in Phoenix: Triple-digit temperatures persist well past sundown. If internal temperatures begin to hit 104 degrees, cellular machinery that helps the body adapt to heat breaks down, causing one to move from heat exhaustion to heat stroke.

There were four heat-related delays out of McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Monday, but none had been reported for Tuesday.
