Manchester United's Jose Mourinho accused of €3.3 million tax fraud in Spain

Manchester United's Jose Mourinho accused of €3.3 million tax fraud in Spain

They claim that Mourinho - who took over at United previous year - failed to declare income of 1.6 million euros in 2011 and 1.7 million euros in 2012. That same report reveals a prosecutor said he did not declare income from the use of his lucrative image rights in order to get an "illicit benefit".

The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities €3.3m ($3.7m), a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday, adding it had presented a claim to a local court.

Mourinho is the latest high-profile person in football to be accused of tax fraud in Spain.

Ronaldo, who is in Russian Federation at the Confederations Cup playing for Portugal, has played in Spain for Real Madrid since 2009.

Ronaldo has denied any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors accuse the Portugal global of evading tax via a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands and another in Ireland, known for its low corporate tax rate.

The four-time Ballon d'Or victor is alleged to have created a "business structure" in 2010 to hide his earnings from image rights between 2011 and 2014.

The Portuguese was head coach at Spanish giants Real Madrid for three seasons from 2010 to 2013, during which time he won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish supercup.

Earlier this month, Spanish prosecutors filed a criminal tax fraud lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo, alleging that the Real Madrid forward defrauded the Spanish state out of €14.7m (£13m) between 2011 and 2014.

The allegations have led to uncertainty about the 32 year-old's future at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Manchester United linked as a possible destination should he opt to leave Spain.

Both were given 21-month jail sentences, though neither is expected to serve the time as it was a first offence and the sentence was under two years.
