McCain: Americans 'stupid' to still want to travel to NKorea

Wambier's parents did not cite a specific cause of death but blamed "awful, torturous mistreatment" by North Korea. He died six days later surrounded by relatives in his hometown of Cincinnati.

A senior North Korean official speaking after the death of a USA student held prisoner for 17 months by Pyongyang said on Tuesday his country followed national law and worldwide standards in its treatment of detainees.

"It's a total disgrace what happened to Otto", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

"I'm sure there are high-ranking North Koreans who regret what happened to Warmbier and who think this was a mistake", Delury said.

Trump added that Warmbier "should have been brought home that same day", apparently referring to when he was arrested.

Today, a pair of U.S. B-1B bombers, like these, flew over South Korea, just below the demilitarized zone, in a show of force.

"It's unlikely that Washington and Seoul will let Warmbier's death entirely derail their efforts at talks because North Korea's nuclear weapons program is such a serious and immediate threat", said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University. "It does demand something that's beyond the typical response".

The United States stations tens of thousands of troops in South Korea and Japan. In April, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that a war would devastate the region.

"You're in America and you think you can do stuff and there's no consequences, but in North Korea you don't have those same privileges", he said. The country may not worry about much of anything externally, even the death of a young tourist, until it reaches its goal of building a nuclear ICBM that can ease what it sees as decades of USA and South Korean hostility.

"Hard labor in North Korea means torture", the deputy AG continued.

"We had no higher priority than securing the release of Americans detained overseas", Price said. Warmbier's death undercuts any progress from those meetings.

Warmbier was released from a North Korean prison last week and was sent back home in a coma, a condition he had been in for more than a year in a coma. The group said it was denied requests to meet Warmbier or anyone who'd been in contact with him in Pyongyang, only receiving assurances that he was fine. That's despicable. Warmbier didn't deserve this treatment, and neither do North Korean's thousands of other political prisoners.

The Trump administration doesn't need an act of Congress to bar Americans from traveling to North Korea.

To probe those questions and more, we turn to veteran diplomat Kathleen Stephens. China has backed the Kim dynasty since the Korean War, in part to keep USA troops away from its border.

Trump's tweet about China took some advisers by surprise.

Tony Kim, who also goes by his Korean name, Kim Sang-duk, is a 58-year-old US citizen who was temporarily teaching an accounting course at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, North Korea's only private university.

"When Otto was first taken, we were advised by the past administration to take a low profile while they worked to obtain his release".

"Most likely, China will express concern and regret over the case", Shi said. In February 2015, Kim wrote in a fundraising post on the website of a Korean-Brazilian church that he was a Christian missionary devoted to helping North Korea's people learn to be self-sufficient. Earlier this month, Moon temporarily halted the installation of a USA missile shield pending an environmental impact assessment.

His death led Young Pioneer Tours to announce it would no longer offer U.S. citizens trips to North Korea. According to The Guardian, Dr Kanter said, "He has not spoken".

JOHN YANG: Mr. Trump also indirectly blamed the Obama administration for not getting him home sooner. Next week, the new South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, will be meeting with President Trump.

"These flights with Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) demonstrate solidarity between Japan, ROK and the U.S. to defend against provocative and destabilizing actions in the Pacific theater", a USA military official told CNN.
