McCain: Americans 'stupid' to travel to North Korea

Warmbier's family said the Obama White House instructed them not to talk about Warmbier so as not to "upset the North Koreans".

"We can make speculations that there were many unjust and cruel treatments to Mr. Warmbier". He spent a year and a half in North Korea.

Han Tae Song, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, speaking in his first interview since taking up the post in February, declined to comment specifically about Warmbier's case or the fate of other American, South Korean and Canadian detainees still held by his country.

The global community must now recognize the reality that North Korea is a human rights black hole for both foreigners and citizens.

His family said on Monday that he first appeared anguished when he first arrived home, but died "at peace".

North Korea revealed on May 7 that Kim Hak-song had been detained on charges such as espionage and crimes against the state, making him the third American now being held and the 10th in total to be detained by North Korea's current leader, Kim Jong Un.

Brain scans taken by the North Koreans in April 2016 led physicians to believe that Warmbier suffered his injuries in the weeks before the scans were taken.

Park also insisted Pyongyang would "have to quickly return" the remaining South Korean and American captives and that Seoul would do all it can to achieve that outcome.

But on Tuesday, answering a question during an Oval Office meeting with the Ukrainian president, Trump focused on lamenting the length of Warmbier's imprisonment and the delay in securing his release.

President Donald Trump says the death of a 22-year-old college student who was detained for almost a year and a half in North Korea is a "total disgrace".

At the time of Warmbier's release, a White House official said Joseph Yun, the US envoy on North Korea, had met with North Korean foreign ministry representatives in Norway the previous month.

"Let us state the facts plainly: Otto Warmbier, an American citizen, was murdered by the Kim Jong-un regime".

Yun learned about Warmbier's condition in a meeting a week before the release from the North Korean ambassador at the U.N.in NY.

The tour operator said that it was denied any opportunity to meet with Warmbier after his detention, and that the way it was handled was "appalling".

"It's painful that Mr. Warmbier was not among them, but our efforts on his behalf never ceased", he said.

Governor John Kasich called it more proof of the evil nature of North Korea and offered prayers to the Warmbier family.

Senators John McCain and Marco Rubio did not mince their words as they expressed outrage over the death of the 22-year-old, who was released back to the USA last week in a coma and later died. He and others freed from North Korea have said they were coached and coerced into giving confessions.

"Working with such a country, we must achieve the goal of the complete dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear program", Moon said.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the administration would "continue to apply economic and political pressure" on North Korea, in conjunction with U.S. allies and China, "to change this behaviour and this regime".

He then added with no explanation: "We'll be able to handle it".

North Korea's government said it released Warmbier last week on "humanitarian grounds". This doesn't happen if I'm president! "I think the president worked really hard to do what he could to secure the release of him".

"I believe that we will probably have such discussions", Moon said.
