NASA Discovers 219 New Planets with Kepler Mission; 10 Are Earth-Size

Objects of interest identified by NASA's Kepler space telescope are eventually called "planet candidates" after further vetting. It is the most comprehensive catalog of exoplanets from the telescopes 1st 4 years of searching he stars.

NASA's Kepler space telescope has discovered 219 new planet candidates outside our Solar System, 10 of which may be about the same size and temperature as the Earth, indicating the possibility of life.

'Are we alone? Maybe Kepler today has told us indirectly, although we need confirmation, that we are probably not alone, ' Kepler scientist Mario Perez said in a news conference.

The scientists found that the newly discovered planets tended to fall into two distinct categories - smaller, rocky planets that are usually around 75 percent bigger than Earth, and much larger, gaseous planets similar in size to Neptune.

The goal has been to discover more Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of a star, where water can pool on the surface of a planet and potentially support life.

The final Kepler catalogue will serve as the foundation for more study to determine the prevalence and demographics of planets in the galaxy, while the discovery of the two distinct planetary populations shows that about half the planets we know of in the galaxy either have no surface, or lie beneath a deep, crushing atmosphere an environment unlikely to host life.

"One of the great surprises from Kepler is that almost every star has at least one planet larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune".

"It feels a bit like the end of an era, but actually I see it as a new beginning". It's also the final catalog from the spacecraft's view of the patch of sky in the Cygnus constellation.

"This is a major new division in the family tree of exoplanets, somewhat analogous to the discovery that mammals and lizards are separate branches on the tree of life", Benjamin Fulton, who is a researcher at the University of Hawaii in Manoa and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), explained at Monday's briefing, according to Space.com.

"It's awesome the things that Kepler has found", said Kepler scientist Susan Thompson of the SETI Institute in California.

The latest Kepler mission data dump offered evidence of 219 new exoplanet candidates. Besides finding these planets, the telescope helps researchers understand how frequent they are and if they can predict their existence to some extent. First, nature is believed to be fond of making plenty of planets roughly Earth's size.

It will take about a year for the Kepler team to come up with a number of habitable planet frequency, she said.

The K2 mission, which began in 2014, is extending Kepler's legacy to new parts of the sky and new fields of study, adding to NASA's "arc of discovery".
