Paris attacker had gun permit despite being on terror watch list

A driver rammed a vehicle carrying weapons and explosives into a police van as it drove down Paris' Champs Elysees avenue on Monday, officials said, adding that the man died in the incident and the situation was under control.

An investigating source said: "There was a sudden impact, and then a fireball".

Dzaziri was carrying in his auto an assault rifle, two handguns, ammo and two large gas canisters, two police sources and the judicial official told the paper.

The other problem is what to do about gun licensees issued and weapons sold before an individual ends up on Fiche S, France's terrorist watch list.

In the Champs Elysees area in Paris, the vehicle crashed into the van of the gendarmerie, and then caught fire. France's anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the ramming of a police vehicle on Paris' Champs-Elysees avenue. Authorities believe the crash was deliberate and witnesses say the vehicle burst into flames as police grabbed the man inside and put him on the ground.

"We saw big flames coming out of the front windows of the auto", 16-year-old eyewitness Adrien Cairo told Reuters.

The incident came just two months after a policeman was shot and killed on the avenue, days before the first round of France's presidential election.

"By God's grace, we were able to protect him from harm", Mahmoud said.

It imposed emergency security rules in the wake of the 2015 attacks which killed 130 people. The government will discuss extending the measure through November 1 at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday.

Police reportedly had to smash the auto windows to pull the driver out and take him into custody.

Gerard Collomb told reporters near the scene Monday that the man's motives weren't immediately clear. Twitter users initially reported being evacuated and seeing a auto on fire.

The incident took place on the iconic Champs-Elysees boulevard in central Paris, the latest attack this year against security forces in the French capital.

A vehicle collided with a police auto near the Champs-Elysées in Paris today, and the incident is being investigated as an act of terror, the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed to ABC News. Images of the man's body lying on the ground close to the scene emerged shortly after the attack, and he was confirmed to have been the only casualty.

In one of the most controversial moves of his young presidency, Emmanuel Macron has advocated enshrining certain state of emergency special police powers into French law.

"Once again our security forces have been targeted". Paris police said neither gendarmes nor passers-by were injured.

A subway station in the area is closed.
