Queen's Speech mum on Trump's United Kingdom state visit

Queen's Speech mum on Trump's United Kingdom state visit

The Queen had been seen at the State Opening of Parliament wearing blue, but by the time she arrived at the Berkshire racecourse she had changed into yellow. As expected, the government is indeed aiming to use the recent atrocities in Manchester and London to legalise more aggressive Internet surveillance and regulation.

As per usual, the best reaction to the Queen's arrival at the Houses of Parliament was to be found in the hallowed chamber itself.

After a delay of two days, the Queen's Speech has finally been made, outlining the Conservative minority Government's plans for the next parliamentary session. With no majority in parliament, it will probably be very hard to enact anything significant. Minority governments can be stable, but the UK's minority governments have usually coincided with the ruling party waning in power. So, take today's legislative agenda with a grain of salt: it won't be worth the vellum it's written on if there's another general election later in the year.

Of the 24 bills that are due to be debated in parliament over the next two years, eight relate to Brexit.

'My government will continue to improve the public finances, while keeping taxes low.

The Queen also echoed the Tories' plans for an overhaul of the court system by taking advantage of new technologies, saying: "Legislation will also be introduced to modernise the courts system".

In addition to the Repeal Bill to transpose European Union legislation into British law is a bill to end freedom of movement and impose immigration controls. The high-speed rail mention refers to HS2, which will theoretically run from the West Midlands to Crewe. May is promising a government "that consults and listens".

Warning of an "unprecedented" threat from terrorism in the wake of attacks at Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge, Mrs May announced a review of counter-terrorism strategy to make sure police and security services have "all the powers they need to protect our country".

But the speech was notable also for what it did not contain. The second part, about shutting down Internet safe spaces, refers to Theresa May and Amber Rudd's ongoing efforts to eliminate end-to-end encryption and establish backdoors in popular communications platforms.

There was been some speculation over the Queen's views on Brexit after a row exploded in March when The Sun published a story claiming claiming the Queen "backs" Britain leaving the EU.

"The invitation for the state visit has been extended and it wasn't mentioned in the speech as no date has been decided upon yet", the Number 10 spokesperson said.

But numerous other old rituals of the Westminster Palace were maintained - with the royal crown taken to the event in its own auto.

The speech only contained a reference to welcoming King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain in July, despite Theresa May extending an invitation to the United States' president just a week after his inauguration.

May offered up the state visit during a bilateral meeting with the US president shortly after his inauguration.
