Remains of 7 sailors killed in US ship collision return home

Almost an hour elapsed before a Philippine-flagged container ship reported a collision with a USA warship, the Japanese coastguard said on Monday, as investigations began into the accident in which seven US sailors were killed.

The Navy said the three sailors who were injured in the collision have been released from a Navy hospital.

Late Saturday in Washington, the Navy said bodies had been recovered but didn't give the identifies. He'd left tiny Palmyra, Virginia, a year ago to become a gunner's mate seaman.

They are Petty Officer 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23, from Chula Vista and Petty Officer 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, from San Diego.

When the Fitzgerald collided with the merchant ship, 37-year-old Fire Controlman 1st Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr., "leapt into action", according to The Daily Beast.

The US navy and Japan's coastguard are conducting separate inquiries, but will likely be co-operating, a spokesman for Japan's transport safety board told AFP.

Darrold said that his son was planning to take a leave from the Navy, but made a decision to go on this final trip because it would be a short one.

The badly damaged destroyer was towed to the 7th Fleet's home base in Yokosuka, Japan.

At the press conference, Aucoin said the Navy "has found the remains of a number of our missing shipmates". He said considering the damage that was done to the ship, many more people could have died.

The admiral said the ship had been in danger of sinking but was saved by the "heroic efforts" of the crew. Most of the damage is below the waterline, including a large gash near the keel, Aucoin said.

USA and Japanese vessels and aircraft have been looking for the missing crew members of the USS Fitzgerald, which crashed with a container ship four times its size in the pre-dawn hours Saturday. "So the water flow was tremendous, and so there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea". They are known as the "Fighting Fitz" and the crew lived up to that name. Bryce Benson, was, along with two other crew members, airlifted to a the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. Sixteen hours passed before the vessel to return to port, the 7th Fleet said.

The ACX Crystal suffered minor damage to its port bow, and none of the 20 crew members were injured in the collision.

He said the destroyer was hit on the side and there was a significant impact.

"Because it was in an emergency, the crewmembers may not have been able to place a call", she said, as quoted by AP.

"We are struck by deep sorrow", Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wrote in a message to President Donald Trump on Sunday. "I express my heartfelt solidarity to America at this hard time".

Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families.

The nature of the collision, the maritime equivalent of a T-bone vehicle accident in a busy intersection, suggested the crew of the Crystal could be to blame.

A coast guard official said Monday they are trying to find out what the crew of the Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal was doing before reporting the collision to authorities 50 minutes later. The ACX Crystal weighs 29,060 tons and is 222 meters (730 feet) long, much larger than the 8,315-ton destroyer. It is not clear yet why the Fitzgerald did not yield to the Crystal per global maritime laws.

The Fitzgerald was returning to a USA naval base in Japan after completing a training exercise with US and Japanese warships.

The ship unloaded some of its cargo at Tokyo, then continued to Yokohama, where it offloaded the rest of its containers.

The Pentagon set up a hotline for families of the crew of the Fitzgerald to check on the status of loved ones.
