Republican wins South Carolina House seat vacated by Mulvaney

In South Carolina's 5th Congressional District, the contest between millionaire developer Ralph Norman and former Goldman Sachs tax adviser Archie Parnell has attracted big-name backers on both sides but nonetheless remained comparatively low-key.

Ralph Norman (R-SC) has been declared the victor of the special election in South Carolina's Fifth District to replace President Donald Trump's Director of the Office Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney. Norman has also served in the SC state legislature. That's compared with about 48 percent for Democrat Archie Parnell.

According to Roll Call, a member of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) gave an incredulous answer when asked what they were doing to flip the seat formerly held by White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney. Norman emerged from a GOP runoff with only a 200-vote victory, a slim margin on which Democrats want to capitalize, saying it belies a deep GOP divide.

All eyes in Washington, D.C. are on Georgia's sixth congressional district, where Republican Karen Handel is in a neck-and-neck race with Democrat Jon Ossof that will be decided Tuesday night.

Parnell came with about 3 percentage points of beating Norman in a district that Mulvaney won by 20 percentage points in November over Democrat Fran Person, a former aide to Vice President Joe Biden. "And I know he is 100 percent with the veterans on their issues".
