Taeyang Gets in Tune with PyeongChang 2018

Taeyang Gets in Tune with PyeongChang 2018

The proposal, which would amalgamate North and South Korea's women's hockey teams, is one of a number of efforts at rapprochement ahead of the February opening of the Games in the South Korean town of Pyeonchang.

South Korean sports minister Do Jong-hwan told the Washington Post that this offer could "thaw lingering tensions", between the two countries and make the Games a "peace Olympics", as North Korean athletes would be allowed to safely pass through the demilitarized zone.

"North Korea says the Masikryong Ski Resort was built according to global standards, and I intend to discuss this with [North Korean IOC representative Ung] Chang", Do said.

NBCUniversal, which holds United States broadcasting rights to the Olympic Games, may conduct some of its Pyeongchang 2018 client entertainment operations in the U.S. rather than South Korea because of potential security concerns, it has been reported. Pyongyang also sent athletes to the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, an event that it has boycotted in the past.

The two Koreas have taken part in several sporting exchanges this year.

"If the neighbouring countries in north-east Asia, including North and South Korea, can host the World Cup together, it would help to create peace", he said.

His overture reflects a desire by South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, for cautious engagement with Pyongyang, despite anger over the its recent missile launches and the death this week of the USA university student Otto Warmbier after almost 17 months in a North Korean prison.

The countries considered co-hosting the 1988 Summer Olympics, but those plans fell through and North Korea boycotted the games.

Bach arrives here on June 29 to attend the closing ceremony of the World Taekwondo Championships and inspect the preparations for the Pyeongchang Olympics.
