Too hot for planes: Flights cancelled as extreme heat hits Phoenix

A regional heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service will be in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 9 p.m. Wednesday. They'll last through Thursday, and forecast highs mean the region could set all-time records.

The prediction for Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday is 120-degrees - a mark hit only three times in history.

Drinking it, splashing in it to stay cool, and drinking it some more.

The heat is also hitting California where roads across the state have buckled because of the extreme heat. A Salvation Army hydration station sign gets hit by the midday sun as temperatures climb to near-record highs, Monday, June 19, 2017, in Phoenix.

Jeff Masters of Weather Underground says that "most of the Central Valley will see temperatures approaching 43C and possibly up to 46C". Triple-digit highs are in the forecast from Arizona to Northern California - including the Sierra Mountains. Others went to a bar where the temperature is set at 23 degrees and glasses, walls and seats are sculpted from ice.

In Sacramento, the temperature is expected to climb above 100 every day through Saturday.

The broiling temperatures will also be felt in Las Vegas and Southern California, creating a public health hazard. All eyes will be on Phoenix, which is ground zero for the heat wave.

Even cities accustomed to dealing with 110-degree (43-Celsius) days are grappling with the new problems that arise from 120 degrees (48.8 Celsius).

As temperatures are set to soar to record-breaking levels across the southwestern part of the United States this week, the health dangers can not be underestimated.

Temperature forecasts of 120F (49C) are credited with the cancellations, exceeding the maximum operating temperature of 118F on the airlines smaller Bombardier CRJ airliners, used primarily for regional flights. Airlines can use other strategies for limiting weight during hot weather, such as not fueling completely, then making a refueling stop. Phoenix is the second-fastest warming city in the USA over the past 50 years while Las Vegas comes in at third and Tucson at seventh.

Extreme heat affects a plane's ability to take off. Sweat makes your skin feel cooler and some heat is removed as it evaporates.

The weather comes as new research found that almost one in three people now experience 20 days a year when the heat reaches deadly levels.

The best thing you can do during a heat wave like this is stay indoors.

Las Vegas was forecast to hit 117 (47 Celsius) on Tuesday and excessive heat warnings cover nearly all of California.

The county that is home to Phoenix had 130 heat-related deaths in 2016, the highest number in more than a decade.

Phoenix, Tucson and Las Vegas are forecast to be within striking distance of all-time records. She said she yells at people who walk their dogs without them in the afternoon heat.

People typically flee for cooler mountain climates when it gets hot, but going north won't provide much of an escape this time.

Temperatures below the rim of the canyon are expected to reach as high as 117 degrees this week.
