Turkey's Erdogan approves troop deployment to Qatar

Senegal said on Wednesday it would recall its ambassador in Qatar and expressed its "active solidarity" with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries which have cut ties to Qatar.

Bahrain Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa will meet with Erdogan on Saturday, the foreign ministry said, without giving other details.

The announcement increases pressure on Qatar in a diplomatic and economic campaign to isolate the small Gulf Arab state, which is a critical global supplier of gas and hosts the biggest US military base in the Middle East. They won't, of course, because they're an even stricter Wahhabi society than the Qataris, and while they're less effusive about their support for political Islam (Qatar supported the former Muslim Brotherhood administration in Egypt, for example, while the Saudis did not), they've still done more than any other country to spread al-Qaeda's ideology throughout the region.

Qatar has backed Islamist movements but vehemently denies supporting terrorism.

A recent visit by the US President may have given UAE, Saudi Arabia and other coalition partners (Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Mauritius) an opening to proceed with unprecedented punitive measures against the State of Qatar.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Bahrain's decision to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar has led to a crisis for Qatar in terms of air, sea and land transportation.

"No supermarket panic in Doha, great Celtic array with Irish Kerrygold, Orkney and [Manchester] cheeses aplenty", tweeted Dairmaid Fleming, a freelance journalist, praising the selection of imported cheeses from the British Isles still in the shops.

It's a strategy shared by other Persian Gulf countries seeking to win USA support-including Saudi Arabia. He credited Qatar's emir with making progress in curbing financial support and expelling terrorists, but added, "He must do more, and he must do it more quickly". The US relies heavily on Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar to orchestrate air attacks in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.

But efforts to defuse the worst crisis among Gulf Arabs for two decades showed no immediate progress.

Jubeir said that "we have taken these steps in the interest of Qatar. and in the interest of security and stability in the region".

Qatar invested more than $1-billion to construct the Al Udeid Air Base southwest of Doha during the 1990s and now hosts an estimated 10000 U.S. military personnel there. If not managed well, this connection could also leave Turkey facing charges from the West and the Gulf region of "supporting terrorism". And in its bid to lobby the United States administration, the Saudis spent about $270,000 at Trump's hotel in Washington between October and the end of March, new foreign agent filings show.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Gulf countries still saw Qatar as a "brother state".

Trump's demand that there be "no more funding" by Qatar for extremists groups contradicted the message delivered Friday by Tillerson, who had urged Qatar's neighbors to ease their blockade while calling for "calm and thoughtful dialogue".

"This ruling applies to all airlines flying into the UAE", the spokesman said in the statement.

"Tensions are still high and mediation efforts by fellow Gulf Cooperation Council state Kuwait have yet to lead to a concrete solution, so investors will likely remain on edge", said one Dubai-based trader.
