Disability Advocates Outside Mitch McConnell's Office Arrested

Stephanie Woodward, of Rochester, NY, who has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, is removed from a sit-in at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office as she and other disability rights advocates protest proposed funding caps to Medicaid, Thursday, June 22, 2017, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

One protester in a wheelchair wearing a breathing apparatus wore a blanket that said "Medicaid" and "life and liberty 4 disabled Americans".

Protesters were organized by a group called ADAPT, which identifies itself as a nonprofit for people with disabilities.

Tweets from the scene show Capitol Police officers blocking the hallway outside McConnell's office, as protesters gathered to protest the new healthcare bill.

One of the participants in the protest, Alison Barkoff, said that this health care bill would give tax cuts to wealthy Americans and it would be done at the expense of disabled people.

Is it a coincidence that the protest occurred 18 years after the Olmstead v. LC hearing in the Supreme Court that recognizes disabled people's right to live in the community.

Those who did not comply were arrested and charged with crowding and obstructing.

Another protesteor said "the government wants to kill me" as she was taken from the site of the protest.

RT.com has contacted McConnell's office for comment. "The nursing facilities that people will be forced into are much more expensive than community-based services that AHCA would cut". "They were literally carried from the space out to a separate area".

U.S. Capitol Police remove a protester from in front of the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Laura Halvorson, 33, also a protester, said many of those who participated in the die-in resisted arrest and were then removed by Capitol Police without their wheelchairs - images that attracted significant attention on social media.
