GOP senator says Iowans might not lose Medicaid

But the 142-page draft would allow states to drop several benefits which are now mandated, such as maternity care and hospital services, and would also abolish the requirement for most Americans to have health insurance. "And I'm announcing today that in this form, I simply will not support it".

While Senators have been working on the legislation since the AHCA passed the House, Democrats including Menendez have taken issue with the "secretive" nature by which the bill was drafted.

The Senate bill would reduce federal funding for the Medicaid expansion starting in 2021.

Heller, who faces re-election in 2018 in the Democratic-leaning state, said on Friday: "I can not support a piece of legislation that takes away insurance from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans".

Rand Paul, R-Ky., speaks to reporters at the Capitol after Republicans released their long-awaited bill to scuttle much of President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, at the Capitol in Washington. According to Politico, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is aiming to have a vote on the AHCA by late next week.

And in a separate statement, Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown says the GOP Senate bill would hamper the state's progress in slowing the opioid epidemic, calling Medicaid the "number one tool" in the fight against opioids.

But it repeals the individual mandate requiring people to buy health insurance without creating incentives for Americans to stay in their plans.

The Senate bill would make major cuts in the federal-state Medicaid program for poor and disabled people. Sandoval introduced Heller at the press conference with remarks explaining how the Senate bill would lose Nevada hundreds of millions of dollars to cover its low-income population.

"They can choose to keep standing by as their failing law continues to collapse and hurt more Americans, but I hope they will join us instead to bring more relief to families who have struggled under Obamacare for far too long", McConnell said during his Senate remarks. He said he was encouraged by parts of the bill, but that more work needed to be done. "There's still an opportunity to make this bill better", he said.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that the House version of bill would leave 23 million people uninsured.

And they would bar people from using tax credits to buy policies that pay for abortion and also block Planned Parenthood from getting any money from Medicaid for a year.

"No amount of 11th hour reality-denying or buck-passing by Democrats is going to change the fact that more Americans are going to get hurt unless we do something", he said.
