Lobbyist wounded in GOP baseball shooting leaves hospital

It is a dramatic turnaround for the 51-year-old representative from Louisiana, who was in critical condition and at "imminent risk of death" when first admitted to the hospital, according to Dr. Jack Sava, MedStar's director of trauma.

The news conference came one week after the incident that left five people wounded.

"FBI analysis of the electronic media items recovered which I will note is still ongoing", Slater added, "did not reveal that the shooter placed any online posts or threats or references to members of Congress or the congressional baseball game itself".

The FBI said that on June 12, a family member asked Hodgkinson in a text message to return home to IL.

The FBI said Hodgkinson arrived in Alexandria sometime in March.

In mid to late April, Slater said, Hodgkinson visited the offices of Vermont Sen.

Former neighbors and family members, meanwhile, said their encounters with Hodgkinson were marked by displays of simmering anger and unusual behavior. An activity log at the storage facility showed that Hodgkinson visited the unit more than 43 times between April and June, usually in the early morning hours and sometimes twice a day.

"The FBI does not believe that these photographs represented surveillance of intended targets", the FBI said in a statement. The agency is investigating the attack as an assault on a member of Congress and an assault on a federal officer.

Hodgkinson's social media accounts indicated strong anti-Republican views and an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent said on Wednesday items found on his body included a piece of paper with the names of six members of Congress but no context attached.

Hodgkinson, who was from IL but was living in Virginia at the time of the shooting, launched his attack carrying two weapons, a 7.62mm SKS rifle and a 9mm handgun, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"While the shooter was not known to have a history of diagnosed mental illness, he is known or was known to have an anger management problem", said Timothy Slater, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. Slater confirmed prior reports that Hodgkinson had asked an unspecified witness before the shooting, "Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?"

Watson said he learned of Hodgkinson's connection to the Virginia shooting shortly after 9:30 a.m., when he arrived at the department for a meeting. Slater said it did not appear to be a "hit list", though Hodgkinson had done "cursory" searches of at least two of the politicians on his list.

Analysis of Hodgkinson's phone and email accounts are ongoing, but the FBI's investigation to this point has revealed that Hodgkinson had texted a family member seeking to return home to IL.
