Tim Cook wants compulsory coding classes for U.S. kids

"It has been a tremendous problem that you have had over the past long period of time, so we are working very hard on that".

CNBC's report further noted that "Major technology executives met with Kushner to gather ideas for modernizing the government".

Kushner corralled quite a list of attendees, including Apple's Tim Cook, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos, and Alphabet's Eric Schmidt.

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law, said before the opening of 10 four-hour small-group sessions that the administration wanted to "unleash the creativity of the private sector to provide citizen services in a way that has never happened before".

Apple's Tim Cook also spoke up at the meeting, stating the coding should be made a mandatory requirement in US's schools.

"Because they have the benefit of a congress that's friendly to this administration they have the ability to pursue some regulation changes that some of my colleagues who worked on under Obama wanted", she said.

The federal government spends more than $80 billion annually on information technology, employing about 113,000 IT professionals, according to the White House.

Many business executives are eager to work with the new administration as they face numerous regulatory and other policy issues.

The White House plans to continue its "tech week" with various other meetings with leading tech companies.

President Donald Trump and members of his administration met on Monday with the heads of America's largest tech-, e-commerce-, and financial-giants to discuss ways the USA government can cut waste while improving services, according to a report by Reuters. But if it leads to more government contracting opportunities for small businesses, it may well be worth the wait.

Beyond government technology infrastructure, the executives touched on artificial intelligence, computer science education and immigration. And Tim Cook said that the USA should make coding a requirement in schools.

The gathering is the first event for a technology-focused effort within the White House Office of American Innovation.

The visits to Jerusalem and Ramallah by Kushner, a senior adviser to Trump, and national security aide Jason Greenblatt were widely reported on Sunday night, all citing unnamed White House officials. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk quit two of Trump's advisory councils after the president's Paris climate decision.

The worries deepened when the president signed the "Buy American and Hire American" executive order on April 18, calling to "rigorously enforce and administer the laws governing entry into the United States of workers from overseas". Although Cook is scheduled to attend today's meeting, he is not a member of the council.

The American Technology Council is about to take place, and tech CEOs are expected to discuss with President Donald Trump issues about immigration reform.
